What is a Dental Crown?
There are actually two main kinds of dental crowns. The first kind of dental crown is considered more traditional. This crown acts like a cover, or cap, for a damaged tooth. Dr. Rosenblatt will remove a small amount of enamel on all sides of the damaged tooth to accommodate the placement of the crown.
The second type of crown is the ceramic restoration placed on top of dental implants and also used in an implant-supported bridge. This type of crown does not fit over top of an existing tooth but rather replaces the tooth altogether. It is solid and designed to handle the biting forces of your mouth.
How Can a Dental Crown Help You?
Dental crowns are able to help you solve a variety of problems. Here are some of the ways we can use crowns to help save your smile.
Cracks – Moderate to severe cracks are candidates for crown treatment. Your tooth will be supported by the crown, saving it from further damage from the biting forces of your mouth. The crown will restore the look of your tooth as well.
Breaks – Breaks are dangerous and need to be taken care of quickly. A crown is an effective way of keeping your tooth from breaking apart any more than it already has. The crown will seal the break and keep debris from getting into the inner parts of your damaged tooth. Returning the look, feel, and function of your tooth is the goal of a dental crown.
Tooth Decay – As tooth decay makes its way through your tooth, it eats away at your natural, healthy tooth material. If you let too much healthy tooth fall victim to tooth decay, a dental filling is not going to be sufficient to keep your tooth in your mouth. In those cases, a dental crown can save the life of your tooth. After clearing the decay from your tooth, Dr. Rosenblatt will place a crown, and it will do what it always does: support your tooth, prevent further damage, and restore the look of your tooth.
Dental Implant Restorations – This type of restoration is more like a real tooth. When you lose a tooth, your best replacement option is a dental implant. It will last the longest, feel completely secure, and protect your jawbone from deteriorating after the loss of your natural tooth roots. This is a true investment in the life of your smile, and it will keep you smiling for years to come.
Implant-Supported Bridge – An implant-supported bridge uses crowns in the same way that the single tooth implant restorations use them. The crowns are custom made to fill each spot in your smile. They are then bonded together to form a dental bridge. This bridge is different from a traditional fixed bridge in that it is not anchored in your mouth by dental crowns bonded onto your natural teeth. We will place dental implants in the gap and secure metal abutments on top of them. These abutments are what the bridge will be secured to. You will enjoy both the multiple tooth restoration that comes with bridgework and the stability that comes with dental implants.
Inlays and Onlays – These are not true dental crowns but rather partial dental crowns. An inlay is used to cover and protect the inside of a biting surface. An onlay is a little bit different in that it will extend onto the sides of the tooth as well. Either can fix issues that are too extensive for dental fillings but not enough to justify the use of a full dental crown.
Dental crowns can do many different things to help you and save the life of your teeth. Without them, many people would not be able to enjoy the kinds of smile they have.
